John Tonelli
New York recently hosted a star-studded USA Hockey ADM road show, with former Stanley Cup champions Alexei Kovalev and John Tonelli taking part in station-based practice sessions with 10U, 12U and 14U players at the Brewster Ice Arena.
The event, organized by Joe Trimarchi, New York’s ADM coordinator, also featured Mike Bonelli, an Empire State coaching education coordinator, along with USA Hockey’s Rich Hansen and Kenny Rausch.
In Brewster, each practice included at least 30 players competing in multiple stations and small-area games.
“At one point, we had 56 bantams on the ice and it still flowed,” said Bonelli. “Talking with John (Tonelli) afterward, you could tell it made an impression on him. He was talking about getting away from scheduling so many games and focusing more on development.”
In addition to the stop in Brewster, the ADM crew also visited Elmira, Nassau County and Buffalo, spreading the no laps-no lines-no lectures message in the days prior to New York’s Level 4 CEP Clinic hosted at Niagara University.
