10U Q&A: Have Fun and Stay Athletic

Q: Whether we are able to be on the ice or not at this time, what are some key activities for our 10U athletes?

A: At this time, some of our young athletes are able to be back in the rink and some may still be waiting to hop on the ice. Either way, our young 10U athletes should remain very active and follow a fairly simple premise: keep having fun and stay athletic.

Coaches and parents should be encouraging these young players to engage in races, evasion games and obstacles, both on and off the ice. Staying athletic can be as simple as quick races to objects or away from others. Using athletic movement to evade a friend or coach is a great way to enhance athleticism.

By setting up boundaries or constraints with objects or people we can also enhance these players ability to understand spatial awareness, where is a good direction to go and vice versa. This will help our players’ athleticism and also on-ice game awareness.

This is a great time to create opportunities for 10U players to focus on agility, balance and coordination (ABC’s) activities to create and promote athleticism within our hockey community.
