Commonalities shared by USA Hockey’s American Development Model and the very best sporting clubs around the world are no accident. They were built into the ADM to give our children a truly world-class development opportunity.

One club with a blueprint similar to the ADM is Germany’s FC Bayern Munchen. The soccer powerhouse carved out a niche at the game’s apex through exemplary player development, becoming a model for success at the highest level.

Trophies? Bayern Munchen needs a bigger case.

“Twenty-four domestic league titles, seventeen DFB-Pokal titles and four German Supercup titles...Five European Cups, one UEFA Cup, one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, one Intercontinental Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup. This is FC Bayern Munchen,” wrote TheOriginalCoach.com. “Excellence is no accident and Bayern Munich has set the standard in total player development.”

So how does Bayern Munchen do it?

“Players in the academy play age-appropriate football. The youngest groups, under-7 to under-10, play on condensed pitches in seven-a-side formations. Goalkeepers are made to play in small-sided matches to increase their technical proficiency and confidence with the ball at their feet. To create complete players, youngsters are made to play a variety of positions while learning the fundamentals of the game well before any tactical implementation takes place.”
